The New York City Department of Buildings Selects Metrix To Automate Inspection Process

Ensuring the safe and lawful use of over 950,000 buildings in New York City, Buildings’ inspectors perform more than 400,000 construction, site safety, elevator, boiler, demolition and special enforcement inspections a year. Currently, a large volume of these inspections are managed manually and are not recorded or only partially recorded in Buildings’ Building Information System (BIS) database. Once Metrix 5 is implemented, all information from the inspections will be recorded in the BIS and available on the Web, making the task of managing inspections workload, productivity, transparency and performance less challenging for Buildings.

“The automation of our inspection process plays an important role in our 2006-2009 Strategic Plan and will bring the Agency one step closer to our goal of becoming a next generation agency,” said Marilyn King-Festa, Deputy Commissioner for Technology at the Department of Buildings. “Due to the complexity and sheer volume of our inspections, we needed a vendor that had experience with projects such as this. Metrix fits that bill and will play an important role in providing us with the tools to better manage and automate our inspections.”

Before this project, Buildings implemented Metrix software for their PIPES project, which is for plumbing inspections. According to King-Festa, the PIPES project helped structure the recording of inspection results, which enhanced the quality of inspections and minimized errors.
